The League released its 2008 mid-year WestScan economic activity report for credit unions in California and Nevada this week. The report indicates that assets, shares, and lending are experiencing growth as consumers turn to credit unions for a safe financial haven in this troubled economy.  |

California Coast Credit Union in San Diego, CA won first-place statewide honors in the annual Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award program, while L.A. Financial Credit Union in Pasadena, CA won first-place awards not only in the Dora Maxwell awards but also the Louise Herring for Philosophy in Action awards. Both will now compete in the national credit union recognition programs.  |

| LEGISLATURE PASSES DATA BREACH BILL |

California consumers scored a significant legislative victory with the August 31 passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 1656, landmark legislation that aims to protect consumer debit and credit card information from hackers and identity thieves. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has until September 30 to act on the legislation.  |

Educational Employees Credit Union and Sonoma County Grange Credit Union both received first-place honors in the statewide Desjardins Youth Financial Education Awards, which recognize leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy. Educational Employees won in the asset category of $250 million and above, while Sonoma County Grange won in the less than $35 million asset category.  |

| CU TRAIN AT L.A. COUNTY FAIR |

Come September 5, thousands will eat cotton candy, take in the rides, attend concerts, and learn more about credit unions at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona. The latter will come courtesy of the Credit Union Train, a model railroad train traveling around the Fairplex Garden Railroad exhibit.  |
